Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentration, etching time, and application of phosphoric acid (PA) followed by neutralization with sodium bicarbonate on the bond strength between a feldspar ceramic and resin cement. Thus, 80 blocks (10 x 12 x 2 mm) of glass ceramic (VM - Vita Mark II - Vita Zahnfabrik) were made and randomly assigned to eight groups (n = 10) according to the factors: HF concentration (5 and 10%), etching time (60 and 120 s), and use of phosphoric acid (PA) (with and without). According to the experimental group, 37% PA (Condac, FGM) was applied after HF etching for 60s. Afterwards, samples were immersed in sodium bicarbonate for 1 min then in an ultrasonic bath in distilled water (5 min) for cleaning. After surface bonding treatment, cylinders (Ø = 2 mm; h = 2 mm) of dual resin cement (AllCem / FGM) were made in the center of each block. The samples were then stored in water (37ºC) for 90 days and submitted to the shear bond test (50 KgF, 1 mm/min). Failure analysis was performed by stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. Data (MPa) were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Only the factor "HF concentration" was significant (p = 0.02). Most failures were of cohesive in ceramic (40%) and mixed types (42.5%). The 10% HF resulted in higher shear bond strength value than the 5% HF. Surface cleaning with phosphoric acid followed by sodium bicarbonate and HF time (60 or 120 seconds) did not influence the resin bond strength to feldspar ceramic.

RESUMEN El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar los efectos de la aplicación de un antioxidante sobre las fuerzas de unión (SBS) de brackets de ortodoncia posterior al blanqueamiento con peróxido de hidrógeno (HP). Metodología: Cincuenta premolares recién extraídos se dividieron aleatoriamente en tres grupos. El Grupo 1 se trató con 40% de HP (n=20), el grupo 2 con 40% de HP y se activó con láser de Nd: YAG (n=20) y un grupo de control (Grupo 3) no recibió tratamiento (n=10). Después del blanqueamiento, los Grupos 1 y 2 se dividieron en dos subgrupos (Grupo 1a, Grupo 1b, Grupo 2a y Grupo 2b). Las muestras en los subgrupos 1a y 2a (n=10) no recibieron ninguna aplicación del antioxidante. Se aplicó una solución de ascorbato de sodio al 10% a las muestras en los Grupos 1b y 2b (n=10). Luego, los brackets se adherieron a las superficies de esmalte de todos los grupos experimentales. Las muestras se sometieron a pruebas de SBS y los datos analizados estadisticamente. Resultados: La fuerza de unión de los grupos 1 y 2 fue significativamente más baja que el grupo de control (p <0.001); sin embargo, no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en SBS entre los grupos 1 y 2 (p>0.001). Las muestras tratadas con antioxidantes de los grupos 1b y 2b fueron significativamente mayores que las de los grupos 1a y 2a (p <0,001). Conclusion: La aplicación de 40% HP tuvo un efecto negativo en la resistencia de unión de los brackets. El uso de antioxidante durante 15 minutos mejoró significativamente la SBS.


ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the application of antioxidant on the shear bond strengths (SBS) of orthodontic brackets bonded to human enamel after extra-coronal bleaching with hydrogen peroxide (HP). Materials and methods: Fifty freshly extracted premolars were randomly divided into three groups. One group (Group 1) was bleached with 40% HP (n=20), another group (Group 2) was bleached with 40% HP and activated with an Nd: YAG laser (n=20), and a control group (Group 3) received no treatment (n=10). After the bleaching procedure, Groups 1 and 2 were further divided into two subgroups (Group 1a, Group 1b, Group 2a, and Group 2b). Specimens in Groups 1a and 2a (n=10) received no antioxidant application. A 10% sodium ascorbate solution was applied to specimens in Groups 1b and 2b (n=10). The brackets were then bonded with light-cure adhesive paste to the enamel surfaces of all experimental groups. Specimens were subjected to SBS tests for debonding. Results: The SBS of brackets bonded in Groups 1 and 2 were significantly lower than those of brackets bonded to the control group (p<0.001); however, no statistically significant differences in SBS were noted in Groups 1 and 2 (p>0.001). The antioxidant-treated SBS of brackets in Groups 1b and 2b were significantly higher than those of Groups 1a and 2a (p<0.001). Conclusions: The application of 40% HP had a negative effect on the bond strength. The use of antioxidant for 15 min resulted in the reversal of failed bond strength.

Abstract Introduction: The number of patients who seek orthodontic treatment that may have a history of tooth bleaching is increasing over the time. Bleaching may influence the decrease of the bond strength of orthodontic brackets. Objective: To determine and prove the effect of mangosteen peel (MP) extract to reverse the reduced shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets after bleaching. Methods: A total of 150 maxillary first premolar teeth were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups as follow (n=25): negative-control (N: no bleaching), positive-control (P: bleaching + no treatment), and the treatment groups (bleaching + 10% sodium ascorbate (SA), 10% (MP-10), 20% (MP-20) and 40% (MP-40) MP extract gel). After treatment, the brackets were bonded with the resin-modified glass ionomer cement, SBS testing was performed using universal testing machine, and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) was examined using stereoscopic microscope after debonding. The SBS data were analyzed by analysis of variance (Anova) and the Tukey test. For the ARI, the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed. Result: There was significant SBS difference (p< 0.001) between various groups. The group without bleaching showed significantly higher SBS (8.19 ± 2.26 MPa) compared to others, while SBS in the group treated with 40% MP gel was significantly higher (7.93 ± 1.92 MPa) than other groups treated with antioxidants. The failure of orthodontic brackets bonded after bleaching and treatment using MP extract occurred at the enamel-adhesive interface. Conclusion: The application of MP extract as an antioxidant after bleaching was effective in reversing the reduced shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets after bleaching.


Resumo Introdução: o número de pacientes que procuram o tratamento ortodôntico e têm histórico de clareamento dentário tem aumentado. O clareamento pode levar à diminuição da resistência adesiva dos braquetes ortodônticos. Objetivos: comprovar a efetividade do extrato de casca de mangostão (CM) em reverter a diminuição da resistência ao cisalhamento de braquetes ortodônticos colados após o clareamento. Métodos: 150 primeiros pré-molares superiores foram aleatoriamente divididos em seis grupos experimentais (n= 25): controle negativo (grupo N, sem clareamento), controle positivo (grupo P, clareamento + sem tratamento) e os grupos com tratamento (clareamento + ascorbato de sódio a 10% [grupo AS], gel de extrato de CM a 10% [grupo CM-10], a 20% [grupo CM-20] e a 40% [grupo CM-40]). Após o tratamento, os braquetes foram colados com cimento de ionômero de vidro modificado por resina e, depois, fez-se o teste de resistência ao cisalhamento (SBS) em uma máquina universal de ensaios. Após a descolagem dos braquetes, verificou-se o índice de adesivo remanescente (ARI), com o uso de um microscópio estereoscópico. Os dados da SBS foram submetidos a uma análise de variância (ANOVA) e ao teste de Tukey. Para o ARI, foi utilizado o teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: houve diferença significativa na SBS (p< 0,001) entre os diferentes grupos. O grupo sem clareamento mostrou resistência ao cisalhamento significativamente maior (8,19 ± 2,26 MPa) do que os outros grupos, enquanto a resistência ao cisalhamento do grupo tratado com o gel de extrato de CM a 40% foi significativamente maior (7,93 ± 1,92 MPa) do que nos outros grupos tratados com antioxidantes. A falha na colagem dos braquetes ortodônticos após o clareamento e tratamento com o extrato de CM ocorreu na interface adesivo/esmalte. Conclusão: a aplicação do extrato de CM como agente antioxidante foi efetiva em reverter a diminuição, que ocorre após o clareamento dentário, na resistência ao cisalhamento da colagem de braquetes ortodônticos.

Abstract: The effects of several ceramic surface treatments on bond strength of a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network and resin composite as repair material were evaluated. CAD-CAM blocks of a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (Vita Enamic) were sliced and subjected to aging process, followed by embedding in acrylic resin. The bonding/repair area was treated as follows (n = 30): C- without treatment; UA- universal adhesive application; FM- 10% hydrofluoric acid and silane application; OM-airborne-particle abrasion with aluminum oxide and silane application; RP- tribochemical silica coating; and CA- surface grinding and application of universal adhesive. Composite resin cylinders were made on the treated surface. Specimens from each group were assigned randomly to two subgroups (n = 15) considering storage condition: Baseline (shear tests after 48 hours) or Storage (tests after 6 months under distilled water). The treated surfaces were analyzed by goniometry, roughness, and SEM. Two-way ANOVA and 1-way ANOVA were applied to analyze the bond data and roughness / contact angle data, respectively, followed by Tukey's test (α = 5%). Surface treatments and storage conditions affected bond strengths (p < 0.01). Surface grinding (CA) followed by universal adhesive promoted the highest value of bond strength (14.5 ± 4.8 MPa for baseline, 8.5 ± 3.4 MPa for storage) and the roughest ceramic surface. Grinding with silicon carbide paper (simulating diamond bur) followed by the application of a universal adhesive system is the best option for repairing fractures of the polymer-infiltrated ceramic network.

Abstract In Dentistry, restorative materials and oral bacteria are believed to be responsible for restoration failure. To make long-lasting restorations, antibacterial agents should be made. Inorganic nanoparticles and their nano composites are applied as good antibacterial agents. Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of silver nanoparticles on composite shear bond strength using one etch and rinse and one self-etch adhesive systems. Material and Methods Silver nanoparticles were prepared. Transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the structure of the particles. Nanoparticles were applied on exposed dentin and then different adhesives and composites were applied. All samples were tested by universal testing machine and shear bond strength was assesed. Results Particles with average diameter of about 20 nm and spherical shape were found. Moreover, it was shown that pretreatment by silver nanoparticles enhanced shear bond strength in both etch and rinse, and in self-etch adhesive systems (p≤0.05). Conclusions Considering the positive antibacterial effects of silver nanoparticles, using them is recommended in restorative dentistry. It seems that silver nanoparticles could have positive effects on bond strength of both etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesive systems. The best results of silver nanoparticles have been achieved with Adper Single Bond and before acid etching.

This in vitrostudy evaluated the immediate and 6 months microshear bond strength (µSBS) of different adhesive systems to sound and eroded dentin. Sixty bovine incisors were embedded in acrylic resin and ground to obtain flat buccal dentin surfaces. Specimens were randomly allocated into two groups: sound dentin (immersion in artificial saliva) and eroded dentin (erosive challenge following a pH cycling model comprising 4 ×/day Sprite Light® drink for 10 days). Then, specimens were reassigned according to the adhesive system: etch-and-rinse adhesive (Adper Single Bond), two-step self-etch system (Clearfil SE Bond), or one-step self-etch adhesive (Adper Easy One). Polyethylene tubes with an internal diameter of 0.76 mm were placed over pre-treated dentin and filled with resin composite (Z250). Half of the specimens were evaluated by the µSBS test after 24 h, and the other half 6 months later, after water storage at 37°C. Failure mode was evaluated using a stereomicroscope (400×). Data were analyzed by three-way repeated measures analysis of variance and Tukey’s post hoc tests (α = 0.05). After 6 months of water aging, marked reductions in µSBS values were observed, irrespective of the substrate. The µSBS values for eroded dentin were lower than those obtained for sound dentin. No difference in bonding effectiveness was observed among adhesive systems. For all groups, adhesive/mixed failure was observed. In conclusion, eroded dentin compromises the bonding quality of adhesive systems over time.

Concern has been raised about the bonding of restorative procedures to an erosive lesion, given the change in organic and inorganic composition and structure of this substrate. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of erosive drinks and an enzyme inhibitor (2% chlorhexidine digluconate – 2% CHX) on bond strength to dentin. Sixty sound human third molars were selected, and the occlusal enamel was flattened, exposing the dentin surface. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups: AS-Artificial saliva (control group), RC- Regular Cola and ZC- Zero Cola. Twenty specimens were immersed in their respective solution for 1 minute, 3 times a day, over the course of 5 days. After acid etching and before bonding with Adper Single Bond 2, half of the samples of each group (n = 10) were treated with 2% CHX, whereas the other half (n = 10) were not, forming the control group (CONV). All the specimens were restored with Filtek Z250 composite resin filled in Tygon tubes (0.48 mm2), yielding six microcylinders for microshear bond strength testing. Three composite resin microcylinders of each specimen were tested after 1 month, and the remaining microcylinders were tested after 6 months. Failure modes were determined using a stereomicroscope (40x). The data were statistically analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). Overall bonding was reduced after 6 months, regardless of treatment. The 2% CHX enhanced bond strength after 1 month only in the ZC group, and did not enhance bonding performance to demineralized dentin by erosive protocol after 6 months in any group.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feldspathic ceramic surface cleaning on micro-shear bond strength and ceramic surface morphology. Material and Methods: Forty discs of feldspathic ceramic were prepared and etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 2 minutes. The discs were randomly distributed into five groups (n=8): C: no treatment, S: water spray + air drying for 1 minute, US: immersion in ultrasonic bath for 5 minutes, F: etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 1 minute, followed by 1-minute rinse, F+US: etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 1 minute, 1-minute rinse and ultrasonic bath for 5 minutes. Composite cylinders were bonded to the discs following application of silane and hydrophobic adhesive for micro-shear bond strength testing in a universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed until failure. Stereomicroscopy was used to classify failure type. Surface micromorphology of each treatment type was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy at 500 and 2,500 times magnification. Results: One-way ANOVA test showed no significant difference between treatments (p=0.3197) and the most common failure types were cohesive resin cohesion followed by adhesive failure. Micro-shear bond strength of the feldspathic ceramic substrate to the adhesive system was not influenced by the different surface cleaning techniques. Absence of or less residue was observed after etching with hydrofluoric acid for the groups US and F+US. Conclusions: Combining ceramic cleaning techniques with hydrofluoric acid etching did not affect ceramic bond strength, whereas, when cleaning was associated with ultrasound, less residue was observed. .

Objective: This study evaluated the effect of three metal conditioners on the shear bond strength (SBS) of a prosthetic composite material to cpTi grade I having three surface treatments. Material and Methods: One hundred sixty eight rivet-shaped specimens (8.0x2.0 mm) were cast and subjected to polishing (P) or sandblasting with either 50 mm (50SB) or 250 mm (250SB) Al2O3. The metal conditioners Metal Photo Primer (MPP), Cesead II Opaque Primer (OP), Targis Link (TL), and one surface modification system Siloc (S), were applied to the specimen surfaces, which were covered with four 1-mm thick layers of resin composite. The resin layers were exposed to curing light for 90 s separately. Seven specimens from each experimental group were stored in water at 37ºC for 24 h while the other 7 specimens were subjected to 5,000 thermal cycles consisting of water baths at 4ºC and 60ºC (n=7). All specimens were subjected to SBS test (0.5 mm/min) until failure occurred, and further 28 specimens were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Tukey's test (α=0.05). Results: On 50SB surfaces, OP groups showed higher SBS means than MPP (P<0.05), while no significant difference was found among OP, S, and TL groups. On 250SB surfaces, OP and TL groups exhibited higher SBS than MPP and S (P<0.05). No significant difference in SBS was found between OP and TL groups nor between MPP and S groups. The use of conditioners on 250SB surfaces resulted in higher SBS means than the use of the same products on 50SB surfaces (P<0.05). Conclusion: Sandblasting associated with the use of metal conditioners improves SBS of resin composites to cpTi. .

Application of sodium ascorbate as an antioxidant and calcium hydroxide as a buffering agent has been recommended after bleaching .The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of these two materials on shear bond strength of composite resin attached to bleached enamel. This in-vitro investigation used 60 human sound premolars. They were randomly divided into five groups [n=12]. Buccal enamel surfaces were flattened by using a trimmer machine and silicon carbide paper. The samples in negative control [NC] group were not bleached, while all others were bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide gel for 5 days. Composite cylinders were bonded in positive control [PC] group immediately after bleaching; in delayed bonding [DB] group after one week; in sodium ascorbate [SA] and calcium hydroxide [CH] groups after 40 hours of treatment with these two materials, respectively. The specimens were thermocycled [5-55°C, 500 cycles] 24 hours after bonding and they were subjected to shear bond testing by using universal machine. Statistical analyses were carried out to identify group differences and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to detect the significance level. Group differences revealed that, the lowst mean of bond strength belonged to the calcium hydroxide group the difference of which was significant compared with the other groups [P<0.006]. The positive control group had lower bond strength in comparison with the negative control, sodium ascorbate and delay bonding groups [p<0/001] .But the difference among other groups was not significant. Both one week delay and using sodium ascorbate treatment could significantly increase the bond strength of composite resin to bleached enamel, while the use of calcium hydroxide had an adverse effect on composite resin bond strength
